Culture War in The State Journal-Register this morning.

Headlines online this morning included "Springfield is a Pizza Town." A story about the Springfield Kiwanis Club having its annual pizza extravaganza as a fundraiser. The feature article included a photo of a big juicy pepperoni pizza, slightly charred just right so you get the impression that the pepperoni appeared to be slightly fried. In contrast of course, a story about Hazel Dell school kicking off its "Healthy Choices Initiative" with a nice $87,000 grant from Kohl's department store. What's it going to be pizza or plain milk?

Just minutes ago a news story was posted about a kid who burglarized his own grandmother's house. With the kind of self-control kids show, the winner will be the pizza.

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, states where text-messaging is banned is showing increases in accidents due to texting because the texters keep texting, but they hide their phones in their laps and look down, instead of holding the phone up so they can still see the road. So far it's 0 for 2 against self-control.

I guess that's how it goes for self-control. Good luck you closet pizza eating sneaky texters.

Rham Emanuel may run for mayor of Chicago: My entire life I kept seeing the same people in and out of politics, running back and forth between corporate boardrooms and government offices. Also, I keep seeing the vast majority of Americans growing poorer instead of richer, yet they keep electing the same people who keep appointing the same people. I say "Don't drag me into this mess!" Unfortunately, all the voting idiots make up the vast majority in this country.

Local teens weigh in on governor's race, political rallies, more: In this article of the Illinois State Journal-Register (9/28/2010) Teens are asked to respond to a story about a woman who was sucked down a manhole in a flooded area and drowned; who the teens would vote for in the upcoming election (if they could vote, which they can't); the relevance of John Stewart and Stephen Colbert and their rallies planned for October 30, 2010 in Washinton D.C.; the trapped coal miners in Chile; and whether or not they would buy a Facebook branded smart phone.

I think what the readers need to know is how these kids plan to contribute to their own society and whether or not their education is moving them in a direction that will either require more public money expenditures or a direction that will yield a greater economic return that reduces the tax burden.

If I had the capital and the collateral I would love to buy Shantilly Lace at 5th street and Stanford. I think it would make a great coffee house and meeting center with book store and other activities.

Currently I'm employed in a part time job that offers an enormous learning experience in retail, but I have a long way to go.

I heard this story but I don't have a source for it.

A research scientist develops an allergy to ground coffee, but not the the whole bean version of the same brand. He knew he was already developing an allergy to the subject of his research, cockroaches.

I'm currently trying to track down the source of this story. As soon as I hear word about it I'll post a link.

Well, I'm almost finished with my first semester of prerequisite classes before I can get into the MBA program, it looks pretty grim. I may change lanes and pursue other interests. I still would like to open a coffee shop / book store, but it may just be a private club instead. We shall see.

The Minnesota elections were a picnic. There were only two pies, Blueberry and Cherry, but there were three groups at the picnic, liberals, conservatives, and independents.

Well, the liberals and independents fought over the blueberry pie because their agenda's overlap, while the conservatives had a whole cherry pie to themselves.

How simple do I have to get? I hate embarrassing myself, and there is no graceful way to stoop.

Now Minnesota elected a senator who has only 42% of the vote.

buying coffee turns out to be a three-way balancing act between brand names, prices, and shelf-life.

Usually, the fresher coffee is that which has the highest turnover on the shelf. In other words, the faster it moves off the shelf, the fresher, and typically better tasting.

The fastest selling coffee is determined either by consumers who are influenced by popular brand names, or purely by a consistently low price.

More expensive grocery stores in high income neighborhoods typically sell more popular brands than generic brands because status anxiety runs high, so you'll have to splurge for the packaged Starbucks coffee on the shelf.

However, competitive high-end brands will have fluctuating sale prices that will slow each-other down, so the high-end popular brands will move off the store shelves slower than the store-brand or generic brand coffees which are consistently lower in price.

Still, at the expensive grocery stores, even the generic brands move off more slowly because of the volatile sales of popular brands.

The best bet? Aldi's or Shop-n-Save.

Low priced generic coffee or coffee of a brand you don't know will flow off the shelf at low-price stores more consistently than anywhere else. The same goes for just about everything else there too.

The cause of stale, poor tasting coffee? Status Anxiety. Status anxiety is pretty much the cause of our current economic crisis too.

I paid Six dollars for a 32 ounce can of coffee. I pay $1.75 each morning for a 20 ounce cup of coffee at the gas station on the way to work every morning. The can of coffee I have at home, I calculated, is worth about fifty dollars in coffee sales. Minus the cost of buying the coffee, plus disposable cups, sweetner and creamer, I will save at least $40
